YOUR PUPPY IS NOW 12 WEEKS OLD

At 12 weeks of age, your puppy is entering an exciting stage of growth and learning. They are more confident, curious, and beginning to understand routines. This is the perfect time to focus on toilet training, reinforce good habits, and ensure their health is on track with a veterinary check-up.

Toilet Training

By 12 weeks, most puppies are ready to make real progress with toilet training. While accidents are still normal, consistency and patience are key. Puppies at this age can usually hold their bladder for around 2–3 hours, so regular trips outside are essential.

Tips for success:

  • Establish a routine: Take your puppy outside first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, and before bedtime.
  • Use positive reinforcement: Praise and reward your puppy immediately after they toilet in the right spot.
  • Supervise closely: Watch for signs like sniffing, circling, or restlessness.
  • Be patient: Accidents will happen—calmly clean up and continue reinforcing good habits.

Below is a typical toilet schedule for a puppy of this age:

  • 7:00 AM – First trip outside immediately after waking.
  • 7:30 AM – After breakfast.
  • 10:00 AM – Mid-morning toilet break.
  • 12:30 PM – After lunch.
  • 3:00 PM – Mid-afternoon toilet break.
  • 6:00 PM – After dinner.
  • 8:00 PM – Evening toilet break before play or training.
  • 10:00 PM – Final trip outside before bedtime.
  • Overnight – Be prepared for one bathroom break if your puppy wakes (common at this age).

The Importance of a Vet Visit

If you haven’t taken your puppy to the vet yet, 12 weeks is a critical time to do so. A vet visit ensures your puppy is healthy and up to date with vaccinations.

What the vet visit should cover:

  • Vaccinations: At 12 weeks, puppies typically receive their second round of core vaccines.
  • Parasite prevention: Advice on flea, tick, and worming treatments.
  • Growth check: Assessment of weight, body condition, and overall development.
  • Microchipping: Just a reminder ...If not already done, it's best to get it done before they get too old.
  • Nutrition and behaviour advice: Guidance on feeding, training, and any concerns you may have.
