YOUR PUPPY IS NOW 15 WEEKS OLD

Reaching 15 weeks means your puppy is finally old enough to start experiencing real travel, and you can move from thinking about travel to actually doing it! While very young puppies are restricted from planes and vulnerable in cars or trains, older pups can begin joining you on adventures - provided you follow the rules and keep their safety in mind.

Car Travel

  • At 15 weeks, your puppy can safely ride in the car using a seatbelt harness or crate.
  • They’re old enough to start learning calm travel behaviour, like sitting quietly in the back seat.
  • Short trips are best at first, gradually building up to longer journeys.

Train Travel

  • Assistance dogs are always allowed, but pet puppies over 15 weeks can travel under the same rules as adult dogs.
  • In Victoria, that means a lead and muzzle or a secure carrier.
  • In NSW, a box or basket is required, with staff approval.
  • Heritage trains are a fun way to introduce your puppy to public transport in a relaxed setting.

Plane Travel

  • Airlines generally require puppies to be at least 8–12 weeks old, but international travel often demands more - rabies vaccination, microchipping, and health certificates.
  • By 15 weeks, your puppy is eligible to start the paperwork process for overseas trips.
  • Domestic flights may allow them in cargo or cabin (if small enough), but always check airline rules.

Why 15 Weeks Matters

  • Vaccinations: By this age, puppies usually have completed their core vaccinations, making them safer to expose to public spaces.
  • Resilience: They’re less fragile and better able to handle stress.
  • Training: You can start reinforcing travel etiquette - staying calm in carriers, walking on a lead, and coping with new environments.

Tips for First Trips

  • Keep journeys short and positive to build confidence.
  • Pack familiar items (blanket, toy) to reduce anxiety.
  • Offer water and bathroom breaks on longer trips.
  • Reward calm behaviour to encourage good travel habits.
