YOUR PUPPY IS NOW 12 MONTHS OLD

A dog’s birthday is a milestone worth celebrating. In just twelve months, your puppy has grown from a tiny bundle of energy into a confident young companion. This occasion is not only a chance to spoil them but also an opportunity to reflect on the bond you’ve built. Planning a celebration can be simple, joyful, and tailored to your dog’s personality. Here are some creative ways to celebrate your dog's birthday.

Dog Friendly Party

This is one of the most common ways to celebrate. Why not invite friends and family who love your dog, and if your dog enjoys socialising, include a few canine pals. Hosting the party in a secure backyard or a local dog park allows plenty of space for play and toys. Decorate with homemade banners, bunting, and photos of your dog at different stages over the past year and including a doggy giftbags to thank your canine friends for coming!

Glamour Shoot

Photos are essential for capturing the memories. Why not set up a mini photo shoot with props like party hats or bandanas? Whether you hire a professional pet photographer or simply use your phone, these images will become cherished keepsakes. Sharing them with friends or on social media lets others join in the celebration and admire your pup’s big milestone.

High Energy

For the dogs that need an activity, why not set up a play area with agility equipment for them to do? For this activity it's best to keep the guest list manageable so your dog doesn’t feel overwhelmed, and everyone gets a turn. Remember to always supervise interactions with this activity. If an agility course takes up too much space, what about water play using a small children's paddling pool or a sprinkler?

Cake Time

No birthday is complete without a cake! Instead of a human cake, bake your own or buy a dog‑safe birthday cake made with treat ingredients like peanut butter, pumpkin, or oats? You might need to Google one close to where you live, but many pet bakeries also offer beautifully decorated cakes designed specifically for dogs. If you prefer something simpler, Purina has a range of treats that your dog's sure to love!

Toys

Gifts are another fun way to mark the occasion. Choose toys that match your dog’s play style — a squeaky plush for cuddlers, a durable chew for teething, or a puzzle toy for problem solvers. You can view Purina's recommendation below. Practical gifts like a new bed, collar, or personalised tag can also be meaningful. Wrapping the gift and letting your dog tear into the paper adds an extra layer of excitement!

Time Together

Experiences often mean more than objects, so consider planning a special outing. A long walk at a favorite park, a beach trip, or a hike in nature can be the perfect way to celebrate. Dogs thrive on new sights and smells, and sharing an adventure strengthens your bond. If your dog enjoys car rides, a scenic drive followed by a picnic with dog‑friendly snacks can make the day feel extraordinary.

Big or small celebrations, spending time with your dog playing their favorite games, cuddling, or just reinforcing the love you share is what the day is all about! A celebration doesn’t have to be extravagant - what matters most is making your dog feel special and appreciated.

As your dog reaches their first birthday, it’s also a good time to review their nutrition. Most puppies transition to an adult diet around 12 months of age, depending on their breed and size. If you haven’t already, consider speaking with your veterinarian about when to switch your dog onto an adult formula to support their continued growth and long-term health.
