YOUR PUPPY IS NOW 11 WEEKS OLD

At 11 weeks of age, your puppy is growing rapidly, exploring the world with curiosity, and beginning to settle into routines. While nutrition, training, and socialisation remain vital, grooming is another essential aspect of care that often gets overlooked in the early weeks. Grooming is not just about keeping your puppy clean—it plays a critical role in their health, comfort, and emotional development.

Building Comfort with Grooming

At this stage, puppies are highly impressionable. Introducing grooming early helps them become comfortable with being handled, which is important for both home care and future vet visits. Brushing, nail trimming, and checking ears or teeth can feel strange to a young puppy, so gentle, positive experiences now will reduce stress later. Use treats and praise to make grooming sessions enjoyable, and keep them short to match your puppy’s attention span.

Coat Care and Skin Health

Regular brushing removes loose fur, dirt, and debris, while also preventing mats and tangles—especially in breeds with longer coats. Brushing stimulates circulation and distributes natural oils across the skin, keeping the coat shiny and healthy. It also gives you the chance to check for signs of irritation, fleas, or ticks. Catching these issues early can prevent discomfort and more serious health problems. Bathing should be occasional at this age, as over-washing can strip natural oils from the coat. Use a gentle puppy shampoo when needed and always dry your puppy thoroughly to avoid chills.

Nail and Paw Care

Puppy nails grow quickly, and if left untrimmed, they can become uncomfortable or even cause injury. Long nails may affect how your puppy walks and can lead to joint issues over time. Introduce nail trimming gradually, using proper puppy nail clippers, and reward calm behavior. Checking paws regularly also helps you spot cuts, foreign objects, or signs of irritation.

Ear and Dental Hygiene

Ears should be checked weekly for dirt, wax buildup, or signs of infection. Some breeds are more prone to ear problems, so early care is especially important. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner and cotton pads—never insert anything deep into the ear canal.

Dental care is another grooming step that supports long-term health. At 11 weeks, puppies are teething, so introducing tooth brushing with a soft puppy toothbrush and dog-safe toothpaste helps them adjust. Healthy teeth and gums reduce the risk of dental disease later in life.

Bonding Through Grooming

Beyond physical health, grooming strengthens the bond between you and your puppy. These quiet, hands-on moments build trust and reinforce your role as a source of comfort and care. Puppies that are regularly groomed from a young age are more relaxed during vet visits, grooming appointments, and everyday handling.
