How to Choose a Dog

If you are becoming a dog owner, do you have what it takes? Owning a dog comes with its own set of responsibilities and you need to be ready for the commitment of caring for a full-time pet for the next 10 to 15 years. It’s a good idea to learn about characteristics of different breeds before choosing a dog.

The first step to choosing a puppy is to track down a responsible breeder or animal shelter like the AWLA. Choose a trustworthy breeder, and a dog that is friendly and healthy.

If you are adopting an adult dog you’ll be giving a second chance to a deserving pet. There are innumerable rehoming organisations Australia-wide, from national charities to local shelters and kennels. We recommend contacting Animal Welfare League Australia (AWLA) the RSPCA.
