Digestive system

The digestive system has two main functions: First, to digest and absorb essential nutrients that can be used by the other protective systems. Secondly, to protect the body against harmful agents (such as bacteria and toxins) attempting to enter the body from the outside world (via ingestion). In this role, the digestive system acts not only as an important physical and chemical barrier, it also provides critical immunological defences.
