Dogs are our best friends and like us they occasionally get ill. If your dog is sick, it’s important that you know what the symptoms indicate, so you can take appropriate action.
Refusing to eat, excessive thirst and a general lethargy or tiredness are often some of the first signs that you have a sick dog. Repeated vomiting, gagging, coughing or sneezing are more obvious signs, as are itch flaky skin or red swollen gums.
Keeping your dog hydrated all year round will protect your dog against dehydration and help keep them healthy. If your dog is lethargic, they could be dehydrated, and if they are older and slowing down, you may want to check for arthritis.
Other things to look out for are hair loss and what your dog may be eating without you knowing. Believe it or not, some dogs are even guilty of eating faeces!
And finally, putting your dog to sleep can be a painful decision that most dog owners eventually have to face, but often it is the best thing for all concerned.
