Dog beds
"Dog beds are available in every size, shape and colour"

Types of dog beds

It’s not surprising choosing a bed for your dog is difficult  when considering they sleep for up to 12 hours a day. There are also many dog beds available on the market with beds in every size, shape and colour. So how does one go about selecting the perfect dog bed? Here are some useful tips to consider when choosing:

Your dog's age, health, behaviour, and breed

  • How big is your dog? Measuse your dog while they're lying down — then add 12 inches to ensure you buy the properly sized bed.
  • How much does your pet weigh? Heavier dogs generally require more durable fabrics than lighter dogs.
  • Elderly dogs and giant breed dogs require extra joint support, and can greatly benefit from orthopaedic mattress, memory foam mattresses, and warming beds.

Your dogs sleeping style

  • How does your pet sleep? Sprawled out, curled up in a cosy ball?
  • Does your dog like the security of burrowing, or leaning against something?
  • Spend some time observing your dog's sleeping preferences to help you determine the bed choice that will best match their sleeping style.

Your Budget

  • Nowadays, dog beds are available in a wide range of styles, colours, materials and prices.
  • Beds can range from less than $20 to hundreds of dollars depending on make, size, brands and location of purchase
  • Sometimes it can be worthwhile buying a high quality bed to save you from years of buying many cheap beds.

Types of dog beds

Patio beds
Ideal for outdoor use, this bed is designed for use on patios and verandas. With legs to elevate your pet above your ground, this type of bed will keep them cool on hot days and dry on wet days.

Bolster beds
This style of dog bed is usually round or oval and has a cushioned bottom and a raised side. Many smaller dogs find this type of bed to be cosy as the cup shape helps retain body heat and this kind of bed is great for dogs who like to curl up.

Pillow or Cushion Dog Beds
This is a simple dog bed that is basically a large pillow or cushion. This style of bed is a great choice for dogs that enjoy sprawling out.

Heated Dog Beds
Or self warming is beneficial for older dogs with painful joints as the gentle heat soothes and reduces stiffness. Smaller dogs can also benefit from a heated dog bed. In addition, a heated dog bed is great for use in colder climates or for outdoor use.
