Water is the one necessary nutrient not adequately available in complete and balanced dog food. Make sure your puppy has access to a clean bowl filled with fresh water at all times.
Functions of Water
All animals depend on water for life processes. Although water is the most important nutrient for survival on a short-term basis, it is frequently neglected.
Water is important for a number of reasons including:
- Lubricating body tissues
- Regulating body temperature
- Acting as a fluid medium for blood and lymph systems
- Being involved in most biochemical reactions within the body
The amount of water a puppy requires depends on the amount of activity he is involved in, the temperature and humidity of the environment and other factors such as pregnancy and lactation.
Sources of Water
Obviously, most of the water your puppy needs is consumed by drinking it. Some water may also be present in your dog’s food if you feed a canned or semi-moist food. However you should never rely on pet food to meet your pet’s water needs.
Providing Water
Plenty of fresh, cool water should be available to your dog at all times. While you might not need to bring water along when you walk around the block, it is a good idea to take some water with you to the park, particularly in warm weather.
