How often should I shampoo my dog?
It is recommended that you wash your pet a maximum of once a fortnight unless your dog becomes itchy or dirty. Washing your pet too often can wash away the coat's natural oils and potentially cause dryness of the skin and irritation.

Do I have to use dog shampoo?
Yes. The pH level of your dog's skin is different to yours. Using a human shampoo will irritate your dog's skin.

What should I do to keep my home free from fleas?
For effective flea control it is very important that when you treat your pets, or are having trouble with fleas, you also treat their environment. Given that 95% of the flea population actually live in the environment and not on the pet itself you will need to treat both your pet and their environment, particularly their bedding, all year round. Flea sprays, bombs and powders are great environmental controls, whilst regular use of flea shampoos, collars or spot-ons will assist in keeping your pet flea-free. Remember, prevention of the onset of fleas is much easier to manage than trying to eliminate fleas once they have set in.

Do I have to use flea treatments in winter?
Many people think fleas are only a summer problem, but they can infest your pet and home at any time of the year. Different types of flea treatments have different re-treatment cycles. Make sure you read the instructions of the flea treatments you choose to ensure you are using them properly.

There are so many worming treatments out there, which one should I use?
Generally, you will need to treat your pet for two main types of worms - Heartworm and Intestinal Worms. Heartworm prevention can be administered through an annual yearly injection from your vet or by over the counter oral heartworm prevention such as TOTALCARE Tasty Chews. There are also many types of intestinal worms, all of which can be treated with a simple Intestinal Allwormer treatment. These come in many forms, including tablets, pastes and syrups. To make treating you pet easier and more convenient some worming products combine both a heartworm prevention and intestinal wormer into one simple dose.

I find it hard to give my pet tablets, how can I get around this?
One suggestion is that you crush the tablet and mix it into your pet's food, or hide it in a piece of meat or their favourite treat. Otherwise, it's all about getting the right technique. Your vet will be able to show you the correct way to administer tablets as it can be quite tricky and sometimes dangerous. If this doesn't work, often you can find an alternative to tablets, such as pastes, syrups or meaty chew tablets.

Do I need to brush my pet every day?
It is recommended that you groom your pet at least once a week, but everyday would be ideal. Grooming will eliminate loose hairs in the coat and untangle uncomfortable knots. Brushing your pet also stimulates the production of natural oils which help protect and nourish the coat. And best of all it gives your pet a relaxing massage and makes for great bonding time with your furry friend.

What types of toys should I be buying my pet?
Dogs need a variety of toys that perform different functions to keep them physically fit, mentally stimulated, happy and healthy. When choosing a toy you should always choose the right sized toy for your pet. Small, medium and large dogs have different jaw strengths, play preferences and temperaments so will have different needs. Also, a lot of toys have different functions to cater for the different needs of dogs. Some toys are best for improving your pet's fitness, such as throw and chase toys. Other toys help improve your pet's mental alertness while keeping them occupied, some toys assist in maintaining your pet's dental health and others are designed to comfort your pet. Having a variety of toys for your pet will help keep them in top physical and mental form.
